I bought a rebuilt computer in Feb. It's a Compaq and I'm running Windows XP. I bought it to replace my 7 year old hp pavilion. Anyhow. shortly after buying it my monitor wouldn't come out of sleep mode. I took it back to the shop I bought it from and they fixed it.
I took it back about 2 months later because it wouldn't boot up.
had to work on it again. I run an antivirus program and didn't seem to have any problems until May.
I started up the computer you could hear disks spin and click but nothing would happen.
told me to bring it back in and they'd have a look.
time they completely wiped everything out and reinstalled Windows XP. At this point I should mention that while my 'new' computer was being repaired I hooked up my 'old' tower and used it.
I got the computer back I didn't hook it up right away. I waited about 3 weeks. I hooked it up last week and yesterday I got a message about following configurations were auto. updated. Do I even bother to take it back to the shop at this point? I used anwers to find out about the battery thing. I don't even have a clue as to how to change it.
I just call the Better Business Bureau? I'm using the 7 year old computer again (I bought a router and split the internet connection in my room). This HP has only been worked on ONCE since I bought it and I'm disgusted with my new one! GRRRRR.
of you have been VERY helpful.
me just give you a quick bit of background. I know nothing about BIOS or CMOS, I only read those words while using Answers to help me out initially. I am very computer illiterate.
do not tell me that I “should have” bought another computer. I am a single mom with a very limited income. I have this computer now and I'd like to fix it as inexpensively as possible. I have installed a DVD burner on a computer before so I know a little about the insides as long as I have step by step instructions. No one got my permission to wipe out my hard drive but I do appreciate the advice about asking for details on what they did to fix it and I'm calling tomorrow to let them know. I am just furious that these people probably realize my lack of knowledge and are taking advantage of me.
me, from now on I'm going for a brand new off the shelf deal.
bitten twice shy.

We purchased a used Harley thru a private seller and had the bike bank financed.
seller stated the bike had 6400 miles and that is what the odometer said. We have since received notice they are unable to transferr title because title in year 2000 shows bike had 16000 miles.
seller states this is a computer error and has sent us a discrepency form.
the mileage be changed on the title? The bike has been repaired twice since we bought it and both dealerships have stated the wear on this bike is not consistent with miles.
seller refuses to discuss this matter with me. If the title is not change or their is an odometer discrepency attached to this title how much does that devalue my bike? Any help would be appreciated Thanks

The backlight on my laptop LCD has gone out (this has been confirmed by my local computer repair shop). They told me the repair would be over $400 as they would have to replace the entire screen. I'm wondering why the whole monitor needs to be replaced instead of simply replacing the faulty backlight bulb itself? I see them online for like $10, which would save me a nice $390. And from what I've researched online the bulb replacement is something easy enough to do myself.
do you think?

Something on my computer needs to be fixed. If I take it to get repaired I'm afraid they'll tell my parents what I've been doing on it.
they? And, haha, no, it's not a porn-related virus problem. I just need an accesory on it replaced.

I was at a computer repair shop trying to show them a problem I was having with my computer. To show the problem I had to go online and in order to get online they had to change my proxy settings.
never returned my settings back to normal afterwards and I've forgotten where they went so I can change it back.
browser I am using is Mozilla Firefox.

Our business's prices (in most cases) are far cheaper than Geek Squad and most of the competator's (not saying much, considering how much Geek Squad charges–like $250 for spyware removal–we charge $70) Do you think it's the case that Geek Squad is getting our business (in which case, negative advertisement may be successful) or a poor economy? What do you think people are doing when their computers malfunction? (fix them themselves, buy new ones, send them back to the manufactorer, take them to competators, or nothing)?

I am interested in changing my career and people have been suggesting an online college would be the best route, but I don't know. Here's the lowdown: I dropped outta school when I was younger and dumber and didn't realize how stupid that was till it was too late.
I want to save myself from a pointless life in flatwork(concrete). I have always been very good on computers and think that that is what I would like to do now.
problem is I don't know where to start, or exactly what field I should look into. I am mostly skilled at repairing computers(glitches and such) and building, but can catch onto anyting computer related.

I have tried telling you people, those quick fix programs can disable and ruin your computer over time, they only hide the problem until it is too late! Contact me if you have a problem and want common sense repairs you can do in your own Windows Xp O.S., they are there just waiting for you to use them.
and Spyware Terminator are a very good pair to have too, as they are not resource hogs and work very well together. Do not add an extra spyware or virusware package, they will shut you down eventually. Now, back to my original question, Why do people still download these programs? The warnings are all over the place, but who listens, nobody. I have a shop full of such computers that take about 1-2 hours each to fix and i don't get to catch up on building new ones as long as people keep sending their download disasters here. Oh, and I really do want an answer, ok? Thank you, and good day!

I have some kind of trojan virus on my computer that keeps trying to load windows installer whenever I open an application or program. It then comes up with a window that says “please wait while windows configures ccCommon”, but then it can't find the path or file.
virus has disabled my Norton 2007 Security. (Before this happened a quick notification came up from Norton that says my computer was infected with some kind of virus that had the number 32 in it. Spyware Doctor, Avast, Uniblue, Spy Eraser, and a few others fail to find and quarantine this virus on my computer.
anyone know what I can do to locate and get rid of such a virus. It also slows my computer and seems to do a complete system scan whever I turn on my computer so it takes about an hour before my internet comes up.
help would be greatly appreciated. I'm really frustrated. I'm thinking about bringing my hard drive to a computer repair shop and having my whole hard drive erased and cleaned.

Ok this has never happened to me. I was installing norton internet security when my internet just stopped functioning. At first i thought it was my modem not passing signal but i restarted it and nothing improved. So i thought it was the ethernet cable, but i tested it on another comp and it worked. I have 3 computers hooked up lan and only mine doesnt work.
is the most modern one too, so age is not the issue here. I tried goin to control pannel and repairing the internet connection and it says it was successful, but the thing couldnt lie to me more. I am sure it reads the connection, its concious that the modem is there, but just wont give me any signal.
can i do >.<
