No, Deng was ruling China at the time, not retired. He was the main character blamed for the violence too. You might be thinking of when Mao purged him out of the Party back in the day, but after the restablishment of the Chinese relationships with the USA, Deng was no longer viewed as a anti-revolutionary capitalist, because being capitalist wasn't necissarily bad anymore, and he was allowed back into the party. He regained power fairly quickly.

This shows the horror of communism, The chinese killed thier own people, just for standing up for democratic ideals, I think that if it happens WW 3 will be betweeen China and the USA. -AP-

just look at how democratic propaganda can turn people into cattle... I bet the 'heroes' who died feel pretty dumb about themselves now that they see the true face of western democracy... Thank God China went its own way.

"Protesters called for the resignation of Deng Xiaoping, a communist" Well, hadn't Deng Xiaoping already retired? (though i guess he still had influence) And didnt he start the whole liberalisation agenda? btw, im no expert on the subject

These protests were in the wake of the death of Hu Yaobang. Protesters called for the resignation of Deng Xiaoping, a communist, as well as for expansion of civil liberties. The reason they were fired upon was because Li Peng convinced Deng that the protesters were "counterrevolutionary". That is to say, that they were anti-socialist.

It wasn't a CIVIL WAR!!! Mao INSTITUTED a "reeducation" and people lost their businesses, their educational standing... people died and there was incredibly suffering! Personal expression was stifeled. There was extreme oppression all because a "Gang of Four" had an idea to "equalize" people while they remained all powerful. Where's Mao now? And those students are who runs the pseudo Communist, open market economy that is modern China.
